Siena and Il Palio: Every year Siena celebrates part of its intriguing history with two horse races called Il Palio. Undoubtedly, these are two of the most famous events in Italy. 10 contrade, or neighborhoods of Siena, participate in each, racing their own horse with jockey in a 90-second madness around Il Campo. It begins with a solemn but beautiful procession, followed by the blessing of the horses in each contrada’s chapel and then the cut-throat race in which a horse can finish and win with or without its jockey! July 2 is Il Palio della Madonna di Provenzano. August 16 is Il Palio dell’Assunta. This year ticket prices are Euro 250,00.
